These 3 Rust Belt Cities Have Really Come Back

The Rust Belt has a rough reputation for being a graveyard for companies, but is it really that bad?  These are some of the best things to keep in mind when looking for a city in this area.

What Area is The Rustbelt?

The Rust Belt is an area of the midwestern and northeastern US that was once characterized by failing industries, aging industries: and a falling population.  Although steel-producing cities are at its center, cities that focus on the use of steel- like Detroit- are also considered Rust Belt cities because of the failure of their industries.  Many of these cities are bouncing back, though, making the term into something that’s out of date, albeit fun to say.

Detroit, Michigan

If there’s any city that’s been reborn like a phoenix: it’s been Detroit.  This city went from being one of the top industrial cities in the country, home to the Ford vehicle manufacturing plants, to a city that was crumbling and falling apart in front of people’s eyes.

In recent years, there’s been an effort to rebuild the city and do so without gentrifying and blocking out the people who have called these areas home for the last twenty to fifty years.  This allows the city to grow and heal as a whole instead of only relocating impoverished or homeless populations.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh is an amazing city that’s had its ups and downs noticed across the country: but it’s been rebuilding in the last ten years.  Not only is there more housing and more walkable streets, but there are also more installations for art, history, music, and so much more.  The art revival in Pittsburgh has been incredible to watch, as local creatives have been able to show their faith in the city and do everything from creating comics to designing wall art.

If you get the chance to stop in town, take a look around at the local art and creative scene!  From stand-up comedy to cute creative shops, there’s so much to see.  By the end of your trip, you’ll start excitedly looking for Pittsburgh houses for sale!

Buffalo, New York

Although Buffalo fell hard with the rest of the rust belt, it’s been one of the best success stories for rebuilding and reinvention.  Buffalo’s main turnaround has been a change of industries, focusing on architecture and creativity while putting more money into the arts and supporting the unique foods on a massive scale.  This city has poured money and faith into its citizens, and it’s visible in how much it’s bounced back.

What to Expect in the Future

Each of these cities is continuing to grow and expand throughout the years.  This means that more people can enjoy the countless perks of a growing city, and property costs are lower than ever before.  Although many of them still have a long way to go before anyone completely forgets why they were named this to begin with!

Consider the Rust Belt for a Future Trip

The Rust Belt offers the chance to enjoy traveling and seeing the country at a more affordable rate while supporting an up-and-coming community.  Consider stopping in any of these cities soon.
